Debating IP.Board + IP.Content

I used to run IP.Board a few years back (about 4) and I really enjoyed it but I moved to Drupal for I needed/wanted a CMS. With IP.Content I'm looking to move one of my sites over to IP.Board but here's some kickers that I really love and hoping IP.Board does the trick.

1. Anti-Spam, using Mollom and it's excellent, how's the anti-spam with IP.Board?
2. SEO, Drupal is incredible for this, I'm using a sitemap generator that also submit's to all the major search engines. Also Drupal's got some good clean coding which is very SEO friendly, thought's on this for IP.Board?
3. Speed, Drupal is rather heavy and once you add modules performance suffers. Any issues with getting slammed when your site is crawled or "Dug"?

Anyway I'm just looking for some input from current Admin's on their sites

Thanks
Cheers

The Elephant In the Parlor

Well, I'm surprised to be the first one to mention XenForo.

I admit to taking a look at what Kier Darby and Mike Sullivan have put together and not being too excited. I notice a lot of Kier's fans comment XenForo is what they expected vB 4 to be. If that is the case, I'm actually quite thankful I left vB behind when I did. XenForo does have a vB 4 feel to it and I was honestly expecting more than that. I figured starting with a clean slate was going to result in a product nothing like vB 4. I recognize Kier and Mike have put an incredible amount of work into XenForo and I do wish them the best. I also recognize XenForo is in its infancy. But if we're seeing what XenForo is going to be like, I'm not interested.

I imagine XenForo will pull a lot of forum-only vB 4 users over the day it becomes available. As time goes on, I imagine there will be other add-ons made available for XenForo, which will result in some vB 4 suite users switching. But XenForo is a far cry from having all the functionality of the Invision suite, so I don't necessarily see many IPB users making the switch. Invision has the advantage of having well-developed mature software and official add-ons already available.

So, what are your thoughts on XenForo? Yea? Nay? Meh?

I aquired this site for a mere amount of pocket change (had to include the lint too though) and it was a disaster. Running on phpBB but with over 6000 posts already, it just didn't have the organization or management required to take it much further. Previously the site existed as a "forum promotion" site. People would come spam their free forum hosted on some crap free host, and then never return. Thousands of links are probably broken in there but whatever! Fast Forward to today, the site got completely revamped and is nearing 100% total transformation!
No longer a forum promotion community Community Forums is the place to discuss every day admin and webmaster related items. We hold contests and give stuff away so be sure to check it out from time to time.

Big Dan here

Howdy Folks,

Mike invited me over last week and I just got around to signing up. I've known Mike for a couple of years now from the vBulletin forum circuit. I've been watching Mike's move over to IPB to see if I'm sticking with vB when 3.8 EOLs or moving on to IPB. I'd guess some of you know me if not my name is Dan (big surprise ), I'm 26 and from New York. My main foray into forums is my DJ Board. I've had a few other boards along the way that have gone by the way side. I also do a few blogs and am looking to widen my portfolio over the next few months -- Hey I gotta make money somehow

Lately admin forums have been annoying me lots seem to be a bunch of younger folks getting their jollies off or wanting reassurance about how they're flexing their admin tools. I'm more about the nuts and bolts of the software and doing cool things with it then talking about member management as everyone has a different take and for the most part no one is right or wrong.

Anywho this is the second or third IPB forum I've signed up with and am simply amazed by the number of options available to members over vBulletin. I'm going have to get myself a license to play around with. Looking forward to BSing with you all down the line.

Cheers,

Help with IP.Content

Hi all,

Can somebody help me out with a simple task.

Fist of all my PHP sucks, I am as useless as a chocolate fire guard when it comes to PHP... I know this a simple but I keep messing things up and it's now becoming frustrating. All I want to do is make IP.Content my main default index.php. I basically wany IP.Content outside of the forum as my main index but still accessible via the forum as well, so my members can go back to the main page within the forum. You see this is were I get completely lost and hit the wall...?

Quote

I have done My Apps> IP.Content>Settings> Advanced>

URL to index.php I have set to yourdomain.com/

Gateway filename index.php

Use .htaccess mod_rewrite Yes

it's just pointing to the correct path is where I get totally lost. upload index.php from the tools folder, and I lost.

What do I do here...?

/**
* You must define the path to your IPB installation here, with a trailing slash.
* THIS IS A PATH, NOT A URL. So, for example if this file is located in the root
* of your site at /home/account/public_html and your forums are in a subfolder
* named forums, you would set this to /home/account/public_html/forums/
*/
$path_to_ipb	= './forums/';

Quote

------------------------------------------------
4. Using CCS outside of your forums
------------------------------------------------

While the above are suitable solutions, and can be used in any situation, you may also (or in place of the above) want to access CCS pages outside of your forum root directory. A good example for this would be to have CCS power your main website, while your forums remain in the /forums subfolder as in the previous examples. CCS is perfect for this scenario, but does require some work on your part to successfully set this up.

You will need to take the following steps in order to set CCS up in the root of your site (using the previous examples)

1) Take the "index.php" file from the Tools folder of your CCS download and open it in a text editor. At the top of the file you will see the following

/**
*/
$path_to_ipb	= './forums';

Edit the $path_to_ipb variable to point to the directory IP.Board is installed in. If in doubt, verify the correct path with your host.

2) Upload the file to the folder you specified

3) In the IPB ACP navigate to My Apps -> Community Content System. Click on "Advanced" in the left hand menu. Configure the "URL to index.php" setting appropriately. In the above example you would set it to "http://www.yoursite.com". Click Update Settings.

4) At this stage, you can access pages from your forum root directory using the following URL structure

http://www.yoursite.com/index.php/pages/parent/child-folder/test.php

5) If you would like to remove /index.php/ from the URL, go back to the IPB ACP and on the same "Advanced" page, change the setting "Use .htaccess mod_rewrite" to "Yes". Again, click "Update Settings".

6) Click the button at the top right of the page to "Download .htaccess" and download this file to your computer. Now upload it to the same folder you uploaded the index.php file to in step 2. You should now be able to successfully access CCS pages without the /index.php/ in the URL like so

http://www.yoursite.com/pages/parent/child-folder/test.php

Could somebody point me in the right direction wher I am going wrong.

Thanks

The simple plain truth I have learnt in my time as a forum administrator (Fair enough it was using vbadvanced and vbulletin) is that your members will just SKIP the portal and bookmark the forum.

It happened on my old General Discussion forum, vBAdvanced is installed at domain.com and the forums are at domain.com/forums - Members bookmarked the /forums and never ever went to the portal. On my other forum, vBAdvanced is installed on index.php and forum is at forum.php - Members skip the index.php and have bookmarked forum.php - I know this due to analytics showing me that the portal, that place which is meant to be the MAIN PAGE of the site, is the least viewed.

How do you fix it? On The Geek District I want to utilise IP.Content as a Tutorial page, where it lists all the latest tutorials, as well as a portal page which members hit when they type in the main url, right now they hit the forums, which is what I want to be the main focus of the site, but people will just skip any portal I have..

How do you keep members interest on your portal page?
